Energy Saving Desk is an independent website about using less energy at home and paying less for it. We write plain-English guides and build free calculators on solar panels, home batteries, portable power stations, heat pumps, insulation, smart thermostats, EV charging and everyday appliances.
Why this site exists
Most advice about home energy is either a sales pitch or so general that it doesn’t help you decide anything. “Heat pumps save money” and “solar pays for itself” can both be true or false depending on your tariff, your house and where you live. We’d rather show the maths, say where each number comes from, and let you redo it with your own figures.
What you’ll find here
- Calculators for solar payback, home batteries, heat pump running costs, power station sizing, smart thermostat savings and appliance running costs. Every default value shows its source and the date we checked it, and you can overwrite all of them.
- Guides that explain how things work, what they cost to run, and when they’re not worth it.
- Comparisons of products based on the specifications manufacturers publish. When a comparison is based on specs rather than our own testing, we say so on the page.
- Grant and incentive explainers for the UK, US, Australia and Canada, linked to the official source.
Who is behind it
Energy Saving Desk is run by LiBrAi, a sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) registered with the Netherlands Chamber of Commerce under number 42049145. Our full business details are on the imprint page. We write for readers worldwide, with most pages focused on the US, the UK and Australia.
How the site is paid for
The site is free to use and has no paywall. We plan to earn commissions through affiliate links: if you buy something after clicking one, the retailer may pay us a small fee at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide what we recommend, how products are ranked, or what a calculator shows. You can read exactly how this works in our affiliate disclosure.
Our standards
- Every figure has a source, and important figures have a “last checked” date.
- We never claim to have tested something we haven’t tested.
- We don’t publish fake reviews, star ratings or paid placements.
- When something depends on your tariff, roof, climate or country, we say so.
